The Conca de Barberà hosts the first edition of the “3D Archaeology” course for local young people
From 20 to 24 July, the Conca de Barberà hosted the first edition of the “3D Archaeology” course, a free educational programme aimed at young people born between 2010 and 2014 with links to the region. A total of 27 participants took part in the five morning sessions, where they were introduced to archaeological research and to the use of new technologies applied to cultural heritage.
The course was organised and coordinated by IPHES-CERCA, in collaboration with the Conca de Barberà Youth Office, and was delivered by researchers and technical staff from the institute. Each session took place at a different location, allowing participants to discover first-hand some of the region’s most important archaeological sites and cultural facilities, as well as the richness of its archaeological heritage. The programme included activities at the Cova de la Font Major archaeological site, the Prades Mountains Rock Art Interpretation Centre (CIAR), the Conca de Barberà Regional Museum, and the IPHES-CERCA facilities, among other venues.
The initiative offered participants a hands-on introduction to the scientific process and archaeological methodology. Throughout the course, they learned the fundamentals of archaeological survey and excavation, laboratory work, experimental archaeology and museum interpretation. The name “3D Archaeology” reflects the growing importance of digital technologies in archaeological research. Participants worked with tools such as drones, georeferencing systems, photogrammetry and 3D scanning to produce digital models for the documentation and study of archaeological sites and artefacts.
The course forms part of the project “Citizenship and Education for the Preservation of the Prehistoric Heritage of the Conca de Barberà – COPATRIMONI”, led by IPHES-CERCA and funded by the Department of Research and Universities of the Government of Catalonia, through the AGAUR, within the framework of the IMPAC call (ref. IMPAC24/00096). The project aims to strengthen the connection between research and society, raise awareness of the prehistoric and archaeological heritage of the Conca de Barberà, and promote scientific literacy among local communities.
“3D Archaeology” is a science education initiative that promotes the active involvement of young people in archaeological research while fostering an inclusive educational model open to the entire community.
