The programme offers a historical journey to discover what Montserrat was like before the monastery was founded, coinciding with the celebration of its Millennium
This Friday at 11:00 pm, Radio 4 will broadcast a special edition of the programme ‘Sense Memòria’, hosted by Isabel Díaz García and recorded at the Abbey of Montserrat on the occasion of the Millennium of its foundation. The episode provides a historical and cultural immersion that helps to understand what this environment was like before Montserrat became one of the country’s most important spiritual and heritage landmarks.
The programme begins with a walk around the Montserrat massif led by Dr Palmira Saladié, researcher at IPHES-CERCA, with whom the team reflects on the presence of Neanderthals in this territory more than one hundred thousand years ago and on the prehistoric significance of this unique landscape.
From this prehistoric perspective, the episode then moves inside the Abbey with contributions from Dr Xavier Costa Badia, specialist in Medieval Cultures, and the sub-prior and Millennium commissioner, Father Bernat Juliol. In an interview recorded in the Façade Hall, the participants discuss what Montserrat was like before its foundation, the role of key figures such as Abbot Oliba, and the historical and territorial context of Catalonia at the time.
‘Sense Memòria’ is Radio 4’s in-house history programme that explores how the past has shaped the present through forgotten episodes, silenced voices and surprising stories, offering a critical and informative perspective that invites reflection on our roots.
