IPHES-CERCA contributes to the special issue of Muy Interesante dedicated to the Neanderthals
The magazine Muy Interesante has recently published a monographic issue devoted to the Neanderthals. Coordinated by Dr. Ignacio Martín Lerma, Associate Professor of Prehistory at the University of Murcia, the volume brings together leading specialists from across Spain to offer an updated perspective on these hominins: from their origins and biology to their material culture, their relationship with fauna, their symbolism, and their presence in the Iberian Peninsula.
IPHES-CERCA plays a prominent role in this publication through several chapters authored by its research staff:
- Dr. Marina Lozano Ruiz, author of the chapter “Neanderthal Menu”, presenting archaeobotanical and zooarchaeological evidence that helps reconstruct the Neanderthal diet.
- Dr. Antonio Rodríguez-Hidalgo, author of the chapter “Neanderthal Fauna”, which analyses the relationship between these human groups and the animals they hunted and exploited.
- Dr. Lucía López-Polín, co-author together with Emma Pomeroy of the chapter “Restoration of a Neanderthal Woman”, focused on the reconstruction and study of a female skeleton.
- Dr. Rosa Huguet, contributor to the chapter “The Neanderthals of the Lozoya Valley”, in collaboration with other leading researchers.
- Dr. M. Gema Chacón and Dr. Eudald Carbonell, authors of the chapter “The Neanderthals in Catalonia”, dedicated to the archaeological record of the Catalan territory.
In addition, this special issue features chapters written by prestigious researchers such as José María Bermúdez de Castro, Carles Lalueza-Fox, Marco de la Rasilla, João Zilhão, and Antonio Rosas, among many others, making this publication a collective and authoritative reference work on the Neanderthals in the Iberian Peninsula.
Many of the authors are also close colleagues and friends of IPHES-CERCA, which further highlights the collaborative spirit of this initiative.
