El llop etíop és una espècie en extinció. La seva població no arriba als 500 individus repartits entre les muntanyes més altes d'Etiòpia. Bienvenido Martínez-Navarro ha explicat com és treballar a una alçada de 2.300 metres. "Estudiar jaciments tan alts permet veure que hi ha un paral·lelisme en les condicions d'adaptació de les espècies a aquesta alçada". Pel que fa a la presència humana, de moment, no se n'ha trobat, però "sí que hi ha moltes evidències d'activitat humana".
