IPHES-CERCA and Abric Romaní take part in the documentary “Las últimas huellas del Neandertal”

The documentary “Las últimas huellas del Neandertal” explores the world of the last Neanderthal populations of southern Europe from a perspective that highlights their remarkable ability to adapt to different environments and available resources.
The production features Palmira Saladié, M. Gema Chacón and Pep Vallverdú, researchers at IPHES-CERCA and co-directors of the excavation at Abric Romaní (Capellades), one of the most important Neanderthal sites in the world. Abric Romaní also plays a prominent role in the documentary, which includes footage of the excavations and the research being carried out at the site.
The film explores key issues for understanding the lifestyles and survival strategies of Neanderthals, such as the role of the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula as a bioclimatic refuge, their relationship with megafauna, the occupation of open spaces, the development of tools and adhesives, and evidence of symbolic behavior.
Through this evidence, “Las últimas huellas del Neandertal” presents a much more complex and sophisticated picture of Neanderthals than traditionally assumed, while also addressing both the causes of their disappearance and the legacy this human population has left in us.
The documentary also brings together a prominent group of national and international specialists in Neanderthal research, including several researchers who maintain close scientific collaborations with IPHES-CERCA.
