This month, Sàpiens magazine features a report on the SCAVENGERS project, led by IPHES-CERCA and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), focusing on the scientific expedition carried out by the team in Tanzania to investigate how wild hyenas can alter the remains of prehistoric campsites.
The first results of the experiment show that the impact of these animals on archaeological assemblages can be intense and highly transformative, providing key information for a better interpretation of the Middle Palaeolithic record.
The article was written by Dr Jordi Rosell, researcher at IPHES-CERCA, professor at the URV and principal investigator of the project.
SCAVENGERS (Carnivores in human settlements: a new and different way to address the Middle Palaeolithic record) is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) through an Advanced Grant and brings together a multidisciplinary team specialising in archaeology, taphonomy, ecology and data science.
