Francesc Burjachs joins Versió RAC1 to explain the evolution of Earth’s climate

ICREA Research Professor and IPHES-CERCA affiliated researcher Francesc Burjachs took part this week in the radio programme Versió RAC1, hosted by Antoni Clapés, in a discussion on the evolution of Earth’s climate and the major climatic changes our planet has undergone throughout its history.

Using the current heatwave as a starting point, Burjachs explained that, from a geological perspective, the Earth’s natural climatic trend is towards a new glacial period. However, this long-term process is being profoundly disrupted by human activity and the current phenomenon of global warming.

During the interview, the palaeoecologist explained how scientific research makes it possible to reconstruct past landscapes and climates through the study of natural records. He illustrated these ideas with examples from well-known archaeological sites such as Abric Romaní (Capellades) and Camp dels Ninots (Caldes de Malavella), where palaeoenvironmental research carried out by IPHES-CERCA has been crucial for understanding the climatic and ecological conditions of different prehistoric periods.

Francesc Burjachs’ participation in the programme helped place the current climate change debate into a broader scientific and long-term perspective, highlighting the importance of palaeoecological research for understanding both the natural evolution of Earth’s climate and the effects of human-induced environmental change.
