A new Atapuerca podcast explores the history of the site from its origins to the future

The Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos and the Government of Castilla y León have launched the podcast Atapuerca, a new audio production created by journalist and screenwriter Raquel Martos. The series offers a journey through the past, present and future of the Atapuerca scientific project through the voices of the people who have shaped its history.

Under the motto “Sus voces te acompañarán en este viaje desde el origen hacia el futuro” (“Their voices will accompany you on this journey from the origin to the future”), the podcast releases a new episode every Wednesday, combining narration and first-hand testimonies to reconstruct key moments in one of the world’s most important paleoanthropological projects.

Among the participants are leading researchers from the Atapuerca project, including Dr. Marina Mosquera, director of IPHES-CERCA and co-director of the project, as well as other people directly or indirectly connected to this internationally renowned scientific initiative.

The first episode is already available under the title “El zarpazo de la oscuridad” (“The Claw of Darkness”). In this episode, paleontologist Trinidad Torres (“Trino”) goes out in search of bear fossils and encounters an unexpected surprise. This discovery becomes the starting point of the scientific phenomenon promoted by Emiliano Aguirre, regarded as the father of Atapuerca. The episode revisits the beginnings of this scientific adventure through the testimonies of its protagonists.

The first episode features Alicia Mimbacas, Fortunato Lázaro “Fortu”, Trinidad Torres “Trino”, Enrique Baquedano, Eudald Carbonell, Juan Luis Arsuaga, Yolanda Fernández Jalvo, José María Bermúdez de Castro, Marina Mosquera, Nacho Martínez Mendizábal and Emiliano Aguirre.

The new audio series offers a collective and accessible look at the history of Atapuerca, highlighting both the scientific research and the human stories behind it, with a new episode available every Wednesday.
