Ara newspaper highlights Espai Mammuthus in la Canonja as a benchmark for prehistoric outreach

The Ara newspaper has published a report dedicated to the Espai Mammuthus in la Canonja (Tarragonès), the interpretation center for the Barranc de la Boella archaeological site, featuring scientific collaboration from IPHES-CERCA. The article emphasizes this new facility as an innovative proposal to bring the origins of human presence in Europe closer to the public.

Opened last summer, the center combines immersive technology, original artifacts, and interactive experiences to explain a key period of prehistory. The tour integrates audiovisual resources, hands-on replicas, and experimental activities specifically designed for families and school groups.

The report also highlights the scientific importance of Barranc de la Boella, which has been excavated by IPHES-CERCA since 2007 under the direction of Palmira Saladié and Josep Vallverdú. Research has documented remains dating back more than a million years, helping to redefine our understanding of the arrival of the first humans in Europe.

Promoted by the City Council of la Canonja in collaboration with IPHES-CERCA, the project aims to become an international benchmark and a cultural and tourism driver for the region. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to consolidate this space as a hub for scientific outreach in southern Catalonia.
