Josep Maria Vergès to give a lecture on the use of 3D technology in the study of open-air rock engravings
On Friday, 21 November 2025, Dr. Josep Maria Vergès, researcher at IPHES-CERCA and associate professor at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), will deliver a lecture entitled “What the Eye Cannot See: The Use of 3D Technology in the Study of Open-Air Engravings in the Prades Mountains.” The event is part of the “Beer and Science” series, an initiative of the Poblet Natural Site of National Interest that promotes scientific outreach in a relaxed and informal setting.
The session will take place at El Cortijo Restaurant in Montblanc, starting at 6:30 p.m., and is aimed at everyone interested in archaeological research, rock art heritage, and new technologies applied to the study of the past.
During his talk, Vergès will explain how 3D digitalisation techniques make it possible to reveal details invisible to the naked eye in open-air prehistoric engravings, improving their documentation, interpretation and conservation. He will present some of the results from the research project “Palaeoenvironmental Evolution and Prehistoric Settlement in the Tarragona Counties,” which he has led since 2014 and which includes the study of rock art in the Conca de Barberà and the Prades Mountains.
With this lecture, the “Beer and Science” series once again highlights the importance of scientific research carried out in the region and the need to bring it closer to the broader public through innovative and engaging formats.
