The Espai Mammuthus of La Boella featured at the first Catalan Archaeological Museography Conference

IPHES-CERCA took an active part in the first Catalan Archaeological Museography Conference, held at the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya (MAC) – Barcelona headquarters, as part of the institution’s 90th anniversary celebrations. The event, which brought together museum professionals, heritage managers and researchers, provided a space to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of museography in today’s context.

One of the highlights was the presentation “Espai Mammuthus, un espai per patrimonialitzar i difondre les recerques del Barranc de la Boella (la Canonja)”, delivered by Palmira Saladié, Marta Fontanals and Josep Vallverdú. Their talk highlighted this new interpretation centre, inaugurated last June in La Canonja, which has already established itself as an international benchmark for the dissemination of palaeontological and archaeological heritage.

The Espai Mammuthus combines advanced technology with original pieces of great scientific value —such as mammoth tusks, other faunal remains and stone tools over one million years old— and offers an immersive and interactive experience aimed at all audiences. This pioneering project, led by the La Canonja City Council and IPHES-CERCA, seeks to preserve, research and promote the Barranc de la Boella site, a key location for understanding the early human dispersal in Europe.

Through this contribution, IPHES-CERCA shared with the professional community the experience gained in creating a unique museographic facility that integrates research, conservation and outreach. Its participation in the conference reaffirms the institute’s central role in museographic innovation and in transferring scientific knowledge to society at large.
