Paleontologists Bienvenido Martínez-Navarro and Sergio Ros awarded the Dama de Baza Prize for Culture
Paleontologists Sergio Ros-Montoya and Bienvenido Martínez-Navarro have been awarded the prestigious 2025 Dama de Baza Prize for Culture, granted by the City Council of Baza “for their commitment to the dissemination and research of the city’s paleontological heritage.”
The two researchers lead the Pliocene Research Team “PLIOBAZA,” responsible for excavations at the Baza 1 site, an international benchmark for the study of the Pliocene. Their scientific, educational and outreach work has positioned Baza on the global paleontological map.
Bienvenido Martínez-Navarro is an ICREA Research Professor at IPHES-CERCA and an associate professor at URV. With an internationally recognized career, he has published over 300 scientific papers and has made major contributions to the study of large fossil mammals of the Old World and to the understanding of human evolutionary history.
The award ceremony will take place on the evening of Friday, July 25, at the recently restored Palace of the Marquises of Cadimo.
