IPHES-CERCA takes part in the international webinar for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science with a presentation by Lucía López-Polín
On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the second edition of the webinar International Day of Women and Girls in Science. 2nd edition: Conservation-Restoration of Cultural Heritage is being held this Tuesday, 11 February 2026. The initiative aims to highlight the fundamental role of women in science applied to the conservation of cultural heritage.
IPHES-CERCA is taking part with a presentation by researcher Lucía López-Polín, entitled “How and what we study to better conserve archaeological bones”, in which she will address the main methodological and scientific approaches to the study and conservation of archaeological bone remains.
Lucía López-Polín’s participation is part of an international scientific programme that brings together leading researchers and professionals from research centres, universities and museums across Europe and the United States, including the Walters Art Museum, the Getty Conservation Institute, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Munch Museum, and several European academic institutions.
The webinar is coordinated by the Universitat Politècnica de València and offers an interdisciplinary approach to key issues in cultural heritage conservation and restoration, such as materials analysis, degradation processes, non-invasive diagnostic techniques, biodeterioration, the conservation of paintings, plastics and archaeological remains, as well as current challenges in applied research in this field.
Lucía López-Polín is a junior postdoctoral researcher at IPHES-CERCA and has a long professional career linked to the conservation and study of archaeological materials, particularly bone remains and lithic materials from Plio-Pleistocene sites. She has taken part in numerous research projects at Atapuerca and other archaeological and paleontological contexts across the Iberian Peninsula, combining fieldwork with laboratory analysis and conservation.
The webinar will be held online, from 13:45 to 18:00, and is open to the academic and professional community as well as to the general public. This initiative is part of outreach and science communication actions linked to the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, with the aim of promoting female role models in science and encouraging scientific vocations among younger generations.
The webinar can be followed via TEAMS at this link.
